TCM Cupping Therapy

拔罐

TCM Cupping Therapy is an ancient form of TCM treatment in which a local suction is created on the skin. TCM Physicians believe that this mobilizes blood flow in order to promote healing. In Singapore TCM Clinics, TCM Pain Management Treatments usually combine TCM Cupping Therapy with TCM Tuina (TCM Massage) & Skin Scraping to achieve pain relief. It is worth noting that Olympic athletes such as Michael Phelps are using TCM Cupping Therapy to improve their performance.

Suction is created using heat (fire). It is used to treat various forms of pain Eg. Backache. TCM Cupping Therapy can be used for back, neck, shoulder and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Patients are advised to drink plenty of water after doing TCM Cupping Therapy to help move blood and other fluids through the affected area. The discoloration left by the cups is normally caused by the painless bruising due to the dispelling of stagnant blood and will dissipate after a few days.

Effects of TCM Cupping Therapy:

  • Open up the skin’s pores
  • Loosen muscles
  • Sedate the nervous system
  • Stimulate the flow of blood
  • Dispel stagnation (stagnant blood and lymph)
  • Balance and realign the flow of Qi (气) (Life Energy), breaks up obstructions
  • Draw out harmful substances and toxins from the body
  • By targeting the meridian channels, cupping strives to ‘open’ these channels – the paths through which life energy flows freely throughout the body, through all tissues and organs, thus providing a smoother and more free-flowing qi (life force).

TCM Cupping Therapy procedure:

  1. Warm up glass cup by burning inflammable material pre-soaked in alcohol inside the cup.
  2. Turn the cup upside down, burn up oxygen inside the cup creating a vacuum.
  3. Place on specific spot on the body Apply medicated herbal oil to the skin before cupping, allow to move the cup up and down specific acupoints or meridians .
  4. Cups are left in place from 5 to 10 minutes.
  5. Remove cups, observe the effect on the skin.
